On the 19th of September, Tottenham Hotspur hosted Chelsea FC for the world’s very first net-zero football match. Partnering with Sky, Spurs aimed to reduce their carbon emissions as much as possible by using alternative in-house solutions and serving different dietary choices at the stadium. Despite the positive effect this initiative is bound to have, there is still a lack of electric car charging solutions that could influence how supporters (and even players) can go green today.
Here at Elite Vehicle Charging, we care deeply about our planet and helping the country lower its carbon footprint. Our battery storage chargers can be deployed at off-grid locations and events alike, with no need to connect to the infrastructure which can be highly disruptive. The #GameZero match really is a game-changer, but can more be done?
What is #GameZero?
#GameZero was created through a partnership between Sky Sports and Tottenham Hotspur, and is supported by COP26 and the Premier League. It aims to inspire fans to make small changes in their everyday lives to lower their carbon footprint, highlighting the dangers of climate change. In order to inspire this change, the team and its stadium are demonstrating carbon-neutral practices, such as the amount of energy used in the game being lowered, how fans travel to the stadium and serving more planet-friendly food.
Tottenham Hotspur was voted the greenest club in the premier league earlier this year, and have made steps to retain the title. League Two club Forest Green Rovers are the ‘greenest club in the world,’ and even have a public charging network installed outside. The #GameZero match between Spurs and Chelsea had some great qualities that other teams could learn from, but what about an effective charging network? With plenty of electric vehicle (EV) charge points in the UK, there should be enough places for EV drivers to charge sufficiently. But this isn’t the case at most football grounds.
Using Portable EV Chargers at Football Matches
Many clubs refrain from installing charging stations at their grounds as the disruption can be greatly challenging. They also leave a legacy and cannot easily be removed should the ground need to expand in size, and connecting to the charging infrastructure can be quite overwhelming for a ground. Instead, football clubs should consider electric car charging solutions for their players and fans that are less permanent. Battery storage chargers are portable, and can be deployed and removed easily.
Here at Elite Vehicle Charging, we provide an effective concierge service to ensure full maintenance of your chargers throughout your rental period. Football clubs could learn a lot from the #GameZero match, and we hope the trend will continue with other premier league, championship and lower league clubs. Players and fans can charge their electric cars effectively, encouraging more eco-conscious people to travel themselves to a match with the incentive that their vehicle will get a good charge during the match.
How We Can Help
Here at Elite Vehicle Charging, we care deeply about our planet, and we always encourage individuals and big corporations to do their bit and make a difference to their fan’s perspectives. We can deploy our chargers to off-grid locations to ensure remote areas don’t get left behind in the EV surge. Events such as music festivals and sporting events can benefit from portable chargers, as they don’t leave a mark on the landscape.
