New Figures
As demand for zero-emission vehicles grows, drivers are flocking to buy used electric cars, with sales more than doubling in the last year.
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the number of electric cars jumped by 120% from 6,600 in the first three months of 2021, to around 14,600 in the first quarter of this year.
Mike Hawes, the chief execute at SMMT, has said:
“Although there is some way to go before we see the recent growth in new EVs replicated in the used market, a buoyant new car market will be vital to help drive fleet renewal, which is essential to the delivery of carbon savings.”
Overall secondhand car sales increased by 5.1% year on year to 1.7 million, according to SMMT data released on Tuesday, however, they were still 12% lower than the year before the epidemic.
Auto Trader data shows that average prices for all used automobiles on its marketplace increased from £13,900 in April 2020 to £17,400 in April 2022. During that time, prices for mass-market used electric vehicles increased from £18,500 to £25,800.
Why is This?
In addition, electric cars can potentially have government incentives to aid drivers in the purchase. The government will grant a Plug-In Automobile Grant of up to £3,000 towards the cost of a brand new electric car starting in 2020. (PICG). To be eligible, the vehicle must emit less than 50g of CO2 per kilometre and be able to go at least 70 miles on electric power, so double-check with your salesperson before buying.
There can be a number of reasons. For example, city centres have begun to bring stricter measures when it comes to carbon emissions. Specifically in London, for which mayor Sadiq Khan has stated, that there will be a £3.50 charge for motorists with fossil-fuelled vehicles. Also, with the 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel cars, drivers are not seeing the point of purchasing a new car, as they will most likely become obsolete.
Road tax is waived for zero-emission vehicles that cost less than £40,000. For the first five years of ownership, cars over that price pay £340 in road tax, after which they are exempt.
