Over the years, the government has made an effort to convince drivers to switch to carbon-free vehicles, such as electric and hybrid. These grants were provided by the Office for Zero-Emission Vehicles (OZEV), which recognised the numerous advantages of investing in the EV industry. All of these benefits, together with not paying congestion fees and portable EV charging solutions available, are part of the government’s strategy to phase out petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030.
Some of these incentives, like the Plug-in Car Grant, which gives people money to help them buy a car with no emissions, remain the same. However, from April 2022, there are certain charging grants that will be changed. Find out more here and how portable EV charging can help.
Home Charge Scheme
One of the EV charging grants that is being changed is the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme. Its initial objective was to offer up to 75% of the cost of installing an electric charge point in a UK house to homeowners with dedicated off-street parking.
Since March 2022, however, owners of detached, semi-detached, terraced, and bungalows are not eligible for the incentive. With a renewed emphasis on speeding the installation of electric charge points in rental housing and social housing, the grant has been changed so that tenants, landlords, and building owners can all benefit from it.
However, what about homes that have no space for home EV chargers? Or those concerned that home charging can overpower the local grid? Portable EV charging points are ideal in these situations. This way, stations can be set wherever the vehicle is parked and your home electricity is not used.
Workplace Charge Scheme
Also changing from its initial conception, the Workplace Charging Scheme previously offered grants to workplaces across the UK that consider EV charge point installation. Although this has not completely been eradicated, there have been amendments to the scheme that EV drivers and companies should be aware of.
From April 2022, OZEV will continue to offer extra financial incentives for small and medium-sized businesses. All in an effort to promote the installation of chargepoints throughout the country. Potentially, businesses could deduct installation coast for staff from up to £350 (per socket). With a cap of 40 applications per organisation.
It’s not a surprise why this would be beneficial for businesses. For the average EV driver, their vehicle is parked around 80% of the time. With most of this time spent parked whilst at work, typically between 9 and 5. So, this workplace scheme is a great way to encourage employees to charge their vehicles during the day by using portable EV charging devices.
