Although they have been on the radar for a number of years now, electric vehicles are very much part of the future. As they are expected to oversell and replace petrol and diesel cars, new building regulations have begun to accommodate EV charging solutions within homes and workplaces alike.
The installation of EV charging points is one of the goals of the new Building Regulations Part S. This will have an impact on builders and other associates undergoing large-scale modifications. But, what does this entail? And, how can portable EV charging solutions help?
New Building Regulations
Building Regulations Part S focuses on the installation of EV charge points through all types of dwellings. It is to ensure that any electric vehicle that is parked in the associated spaces for the home has access to EV charging solutions. This includes new residential and non-residential buildings, properties experiencing residential conversions and pre-existing buildings that are undergoing a major renovation where 10 or more dwellings are being created.
On 15 June 2022, Part S officially came into effect. However, there is a grace period until 2023 for properties already in development to adapt their construction. This also is not the same as the New Charging Points Law, but works alongside it. This states that EV charging points installed after 30 June 2022 need a built-in WiFi connection so the points are online.
Home Charging
Many EV drivers have turned to home charging for their electric vehicles. It is a simple charging method that ensures they will have access to a point every time. Unlike public EV charging solutions, which potentially may have long queues and waiting times.
Along with the new building regulations, it is clear the government is creating more mandatory requirements to help ease the demand for more public chargers. Yet, there are downsides to home charging.
Depending on the type of charger chosen, there may be much longer charging times than other EV charging solutions. This can not only affect your driving experience, especially if you are in a rush, but it can also drain your electricity source, resulting in higher energy bills. Also, if you have a plug-in, continuous plugging and unplugging can wear down the outlet over time. Consequently, this can amount to long-term costs, for which an electrician will have to re-install the point.
Portable EV Charging Solutions
However, what about those that do not have home charging availability? This could be anyone that has no access to on-street parking or has no available space for the car to be plugged in. Though they still want to charge their vehicle, what alternatives can be implemented to continue smart home charging?
By using portable EV chargers, drivers have the ability to set up their own points without having to rely on a network. This way, they are still able to charge their vehicle and do not have to rely on public charging stations, which have the possibility of overpowering.
Also, as they are portable, EV drivers can move the device to a more convenient location, rather than install it on the wall. Just because building regulations state that there has to be space and a WiFi connection available, this does not mean that home charging points need to be utilised.
